PHNOM PENH - Some 10,000 Cambodians from all walks of life gathered at the Independence Monument for a celebration to mark the 59th anniversary of the country's independence from French rule on Friday.
The celebration was presided over by National Assembly President Heng Samrin, who on behalf of King Norodom Sihamoni, laid a wreath and lit the victory torch inside the Independence Monument. The victory flame will be kept burning for three days.
Doves and balloons were released into the sky as a sign of independence and freedom.
In previous years, King Norodom Sihamoni presided over such important event, but this year, the King failed to attend the celebration because he was still mourning his father King Norodom Sihanouk, who died of illness on Oct 15 in Beijing at the age of 90.
Cambodia gained full independence from the French protectorate on Nov 9, 1953 after late King Father Norodom Sihanouk conducted the royal crusade in 1952.
France ruled Cambodia from 1863 to 1953.

National Day Of Cambodia Today
November 8, 2012, 6:19pm
The Kingdom of Cambodia celebrates its National Day today, commemorating the declaration of independence from France by King Norodom Sihanouk in 1953.
Agriculture, textile, and tourism form the backbone of Cambodia’s economy. Major exports of the country are fish, timber, garments, rubber, and rice. From 2001 to 2010, Cambodia registered an annual average Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of around 7.7%, making it one of the world’s best economic performers according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Cambodia were formally established in 1957. The Philippines and Cambodia has maintained cordial ties since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 1995 and the reopening of the Cambodian Embassy in Manila in 1999.
The two countries have concluded agreements on economic and trade relations, agricultural, and tourism cooperation.
We congratulate the people and government of Cambodia headed by His Majesty, King Norodom Sihamoni and Their Excellencies, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong, and its Embassy in the Philippines led by Ambassador Hos Sereythonh, on the occasion of its National Day. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

How about the independence from the stupid and evil thief nation Yuon/Vietcong secretly controlling Viet/Yuon dog Hun Sen in 21st century or modern day, that stupid Hun Sen has hurt Cambodian people, destroyed Khmer/Cambodian natural resources, and has been told by his Vietnames/Yuon masters in Hanoi to violated Peace Agreement in Paris 1991, evicted Khmer/Cambodian people from their lands and properties, farmers from their lands, sold and rented Khmer/Cambodian land and natural resources to Vietnamese thieves and illegal business crooks and beyond??????????????

I think the CPP try to sideline the royals and the king after a huge show of support during Sihanouk's body procession through the Phnom Penh streets. They are afraid of the king's and the monarchy's popularity that's they don't allow the king to come out in public and performs public functions.
