Singapore's Lee pays respects to late King Father at palace

Singapore pledges cooperation with Thailand to strengthen ASEAN
PHNOM PENH, 21 October 2012 (Cambodia Herald)- Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong (pictured) paid his respects to the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk at the Royal Palace on Sunday, Channel News Asia reported.

The report said Lee, accompanied by his wife Ho Ching, laid a wreath on behalf of Singapore's government and people and met with Queen Mother Monineath and King Norodom Sihamoni.

In a message following the former king's death in Beijing last week, Lee noted that Cambodia was one of the first countries to recognize Singapore's independence in 1965.

The Singapore-based television broadcaster said Lee first met Sihanouk in 1967 when his father, the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, visited Cambodia with the family.

"I remember him showing us Phnom Penh then with great pride in an open top car and showing us the facilities he was building, the sports stadium and how the city was prospering," Lee was quoted as saying.

"The second time I met him was in 1982," he added. "There was one meeting which was held in Singapore and I attended one of the dinners, I was in the (Singapore Armed Forces) and we were watching the developments in Cambodia closely."

Yes, definitely agree with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who said what was true. Cambodia back then was very prosper and developed as well as the richest country in Southeast Asia financially.

Thanks for your statement, Mr. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
