PARIS, 16 October 2012 (AFP) - French President Francois Hollande expressed deep
sadness Monday over the death of Cambodia's former king Norodom
Sihanouk, saying he embodied "evenhanded Asian policy".
The 89-year-old former monarch died Monday of a heart attack in Beijing, where he had been living since January. His body will arrive in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, and will be displayed for three months before the funeral.
"Author of the independence of Cambodia, indefatigable defender of his country in the international community, (Sihanouk) was, for many, the symbol of evenhanded Asian policy and ... the sovereignty of nations," Hollande said, expressing "profound sadness".

Sihanouk was placed on the throne in 1941 at the age of 18 by French colonial authorities.
Twelve years later he gained Cambodia's independence and abdicated shortly afterwards for the first time in favour of his father Prince Norodom Suramarit, to pursue a career in politics.
In 2004 Sihanouk was succeeded by his son, King Norodom Sihamoni, after stepping down for a final time.
