Cambodian foreign ministry denounces British baroness as liar [A mad dog will bite anyone who stands in his way, like boss, like subordinate!]

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - A government spokesman has denounced former British minister Baroness Glenys Kinnock as a liar for questioning Cambodia's bid for a seat on the UN Security Council.

In an 11-point rebuttal published in the Phnom Penh Post Monday, Kuoy Kong, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, took issue with her association with a British environmental group.

"As your are a member of the Global Witness advisory board your article can be expected to be negative, biased, exaggerated and full of lies," he said, referring to the commentary published in the New York Times last week.

"Cambodia’s bid to the UN should be actively encouraged and endorsed by those who see a role for small and post-conflict countries that have tried to play a positive role in the community of nations.

"Despite its own challenges, Cambodia has made generous contributions back to the world under the umbrella of the UN. And we will continue to do what we believe is right, despite unfair criticism such as yours," the spokesman said.

The publication of the letter followed news that Cambodia had lost its bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council with South Korea instead getting the required votes.

Baroness Kinnock is a former minister of state for Africa and the United Nations. She now serves as opposition spokeswoman for international development in the House of Lords, the upper house of the British parliament. Her husband, Neil Kinnock, is a former leader of the Labour Party.
