MELAKA: A Cambodian man denied that he was the father of a girl to avoid an immigration inspection.
The
40-year-old tailor instead claimed the six-year-old girl was a
Malaysian national staying over temporarily at his home in Tanjung
Minyak, during the early morning inspection yesterday.
Melaka
Immigration director Kamalludin Ismail said after interrogation at
1.30am, the man finally admitted he was the girl’s father.
“The
child called him father, but he denied the relationship before we
questioned his friend who was also arrested,” he told reporters here
yesterday.
He said the man did not have valid documents and was
believed to deny the relationship with the child to protect her, as she
also did not have documents.
Kamalludin said they also arrested seven women, four men and two Cambodian children in the housing area.
“One of the men, 56, was arrested for protecting the others,” he said.
He
said upon arriving in the area, immigration personnel were greeted with
garbage bags thrown at them by motorcyclists who then fled. The 10-hour
operation which began at 4pm yesterday was also carried out in three
other locations, including two restaurants in Jalan Temenggong and Taman
Bertam Ria as well as a sundry shop in Pantai Puteri Tanjung Kling, he
said.
Kamalludin said a total of 19 foreigners aged between two
and 56 were detained for various offences under the Immigration Act
1959/63, which includes giving protection to foreign offenders. —
