Laos to sell Xayaburi electricity to Cambodia: report [If Cambodia opposed the construction of the dam, why buy the electricity from the dam? It's idiocy!

Xayaburi dam

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Laos plans to sell electricity from the proposed Xayaburi dam across the Mekong River to Cambodia, Lao Energy Minister Soulivong Daravong was quoted as saying Tuesday.

The US-based water news service Ooska News said Soulivong announced the plan on the sidelines of a meeting of ASEAN energy ministers in Phnom Penh last week.

"The Lao minister ... also denied claims that Vietnam and Cambodia oppose construction of the dam," the report from Vientiane said. "He insisted that the project will not be shelved."

Although China has several dams across the Mekong in the Upper Mekong Basin, the proposed Xayaburi dam in northern Laos would be the first mainstream dam in the lower basin.

Until now, the Thai developers have said that most of the electricity generated by the controversial Xayaburi project would be sold to Thailand with a small amount going to Laos.

Cambodia and Vietnam have voiced concerns about the dam's impact on Mekong fisheries and sediment flows.
