Cambodia strongly opposes Lao dam on Mekong

Give our kids a better deal
Water Resource Minister Lim Keanhor
PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology and the Cambodian National Mekong Committee said Wednesday they strongly objected to the proposed Xayaburi dam in Laos, which would be the first dam across the Mekong mainstream.

Water Resources and Meteorology Minister Lim Keanhor said he had been invited to visit the project site in northern Laos. But he said he asked for the visit to be postponed as water levels were rising.

"We have to wait until the water is receding," he said. "What we have to see is whether we will benefit or suffer from it ... If are going to suffer from this project, we will discuss the thing carefully."

The $3.5 billion project is being financed by a Thai company  and would generate 1,260 megawatts which would be mostly sold to Thailand.

Cambodia and Vietnam are the two countries expected to be the most adversely affected by the project and have called for further studies on the impacts, especially on Mekong fisheries resources and sediment flows.

Dam in Lao will be destroyed environment and killed millions of fishes and destroy livelihood of the people whose use Maekong as the source of income to feed their families.Electric can only provide to the rich small percentage of population from Lao to Cambodia and Vietnam.Poor laosian and khmers or Viets lived without electricity for many centuries,we don't need not now,not ever....

Dam is bad for a whole South East Asian countries, its only benefits China and the rich whose can afford to buy an electricity from this dam generated.Majority poor people don't needs dam.

Yobal Khmer.

Let go and rape the Lao PLDR. Stupid stubborn Lao won't listen to reasoning. Teach them a listen to respect our lives too, we depend on the fishery , if they block the water path, all fish will die out.
