Phnom Penh – The opposition parties –
the SRP and the HRP – agreed to unite following a two-day meeting (16-17
July 2012) in Manila, Philippines.
Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha held a
joint press conference in the afternoon of 17 July to provide the
results of the discussions between the two parties. These results are:
- They will unite to save Cambodia, to bring forth the policy dictated by the people.
- They will unite and merge with each other as nationalists and democrats and they will set up democracy, as well as protect the interest of the people, the nation and the religion.
- They will push for freedom, peace in all forms in Cambodia by changing the current government ruling system.
- The will change the current structure of the National Election Committee (NEC).
- They will insist and push for free and legal participation.
- They will ask ASEAN members to respect democracy.
The SRP and the HRP agreed to nominate Sam Rainsy as the president and Kem Sokha, the vice president.
During the negotiation period to seek an arrangement formula for the
unity and the merger, temporarily, both parties agreed to name
themselves the Democratic Movement for National Salvation.
The press conference was held at the SRP headquarters in Chak Angre Leu, Phnom Penh city.
