PHNOM PENH, 11 July 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - The political career of exiled opposition
leader Sam Rainsy (pictured) is over, a senior government official said.
"Sam Rainsy cannot seek support from other countries to press the government as he violated the law," said Tith Sothea, spokesman at the Press and Quick Reaction Unit at the Office of the Council of Ministers.
He was commenting on remarks by Human Rights Watch Asia Division executive director Brad Adams who reportedly said that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton should use her visit to Cambodia this week to press for Sam Rainsy's return.
Sam Rainsy has been sentenced in absentia to 10 years for several offenses. His membership of parliament has also been revoked by National Assembly Presdient Heng Samrin after the Supreme Court sentenced Sam Rainsy to two years in prison for uprooting boundary markers along the border with Vietnam.
