Expat sports in Cambodia

The Phnom Penh expat community has grown extensively over the last 10 years. As its expat community grows, so does its presence as a viable competitor . Where there has been Rugby and Aussie Rules in neighboring Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam for years, Cambodia is now a contender and a destination for regional teams to compete. As an American, I knew little about Aussie Rules, An Australian expat friend of mine explained the rules and suggested I come to a couple of games his team The Cambodian Eagles would be hosting. The pictures feature teams visiting from Malaysia and Vietnam. After attending the first game, I had a feel for the sport and also realized that "50 Yard" line seats were good for viewing, but moving to the end zones created better photo opportunities as the action would be coming towards me. Local bars and restaurants will normally set up concessions turning the outing into a picnic as well. These events become a social bond for locals as well as create a bond between expats in neighboring countries.
