Cambodia to withdraw Preah Vihear troops next week

PHNOM PENH, 11 July 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - The government of Cambodia has made a unilateral decision to withdraw its military forces from around the Preah Vihear Temple next week, a senior army officer said Wednesday.

"Cambodia will withdraw its troops in response to the decision made by the International Court of Justice in The Hague," said Chea Dara, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.

"But it also depends on whether the Thais agree to do that or not," he added.

Chea Dara said the withdrawal was also in response to a statement by Prime Minister Hun Sen that highlighted the need for peace and development along the border.

He said the Cambodian military was not seeking any land from Thailand and, moreover, respected the decision of the court.

Chea Dara said Indonesian observers would attend the withdrawal on July 17 and 18, the fourth anniversary of the temple getting world heritage status.
