Sam Rainsy Party rejects election results

PHNOM PENH, 4 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovann (pictured) rejected Monday the preliminary results of commune elections over the weekend, indicating that media coverage was biased.

He also said that threats against the opposition party had risen even though actual violence had declined.

National Election Committee Secretary General Tep Nitha said he had not yet been officially contacted by the party.

But if it does not wish to accept the results, he said the seats won by the Sam Rainsy Party will be reallocated to other parties that did not win any seats.

He added that final results would be released on June 24.

Preliminary results late Sunday showed the ruling Cambodian People's Party winning control of 1,591 of the country's 1,633 communes, party sources said.

The ruling party was seen winning 8,283 of the 11,459 commune council seats up for grabs with the Sam Rainsy Party winning 2,155 seats.
