BANTEAY MEANCHEY, 22 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) – Large-scale smuggling of Cambodian
and Vietnamese rice is flourishing along the Thai border at night, a
source said.
The source, who asked not to be named, said police and soldiers man 11 illegal checkpoints along National Road 5 from Kob commune to O Bei Chaun commune in O’Chrov district.
Smugglers have to pay between 5,000 ($1.25) and 10,000 riels ($2.50) for each truck and a further 100,000 ($25) to 200,000 riel ($50) at the O Bei Chaun border gate, where 30 to 40 trucks pass each night.
Drivers and business people say rice is also smuggled across another border gate in Banteay Meanchey province and two other gates in Battambang province.
