Palace accepts petition seeking release of 15 protestors

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH, 12 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - The Royal Palace has accepted a petition seeking the release of 15 protestors serving prison sentences after a protest by adults and children from two property development sites.

After presenting the petition, Beong Kok residents representative Youm Bopha told reporters Monday that a palace official promised to help the convicts as much as possible. [Last week readers of this blog were outraged when they read that the the royal palace rejected the children's petition].

"We hope the king will intervene to release the 15 detained residents as now we are facing misery and death," the representative said.

Youm Bopha said four of the convicts had started a hunger strike on Sunday.

Am Sam Ath, an officer at human rights group Licadho, said he was "concerned that the hunger strike will affect their health."

Chan Sovet, an officer at the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (Adhoc), said he was "shocked" to see children singing in protest in front of the place on Monday.
