POIPET, 14 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) – International bus services between Cambodia
and Thailand began Thursday, linking Phnom Penh and Siem Reap directly
to Bangkok by road for the first time.
Transport Minister Tram Iv Tek told an inauguration ceremony at the Poipet Khlong Leuk International Border Gate that the launch of the new services was an historic event.
With 40 vehicles allowed to cross the border each day, both countries will benefit, the minister said.
Although Cambodia signed a memorandum of understanding on border crossings with Thailand in 2008, implementation was delayed nearly four years due to border clashes, he said.
Also attending Thursday's ceremony were Thai Public Works Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan, Banteay Meanchey Provincial Governor Ung Eun, Sakaeo Provincial Governor Nak Susi and senior officials from the Asian Development Bank.
