Phnom Penh (Rasmei Kampuchea Daily/ANN) - Trade between Cambodia and Malaysia grew 34 per cent from a year earlier to US$319.5 million in 2011, the Malaysian Embassy said.
Exports from Malaysia came to $254 million while imports from Cambodia almost doubled to $65.5 million.
Malaysia's top five exports were textiles and clothing, metal products, processed food, chemicals and beverage and tobacco products,
the embassy said. The main imports from Cambodia were crude rubber,
cereals, textiles and clothing, metal products and machinery parts and
appliances.
The embassy said Malaysia's investment in Cambodia rose 41 per cent
to $235.3 million in the same period, making Malaysia the second biggest
Asean investor after Vietnam. Malaysia's investment was mainly in the
garment, real estate and rice milling sectors.
"The positive trade and investment performance in 2011 encapsulates
the strong bilateral ties between both countries," the embassy said. "It
also further manifests Malaysia's desire to contribute to the growth of
Cambodia's economy and the development of the Kingdom as a whole.
"Cambodia not only offers various trade and investment opportunities
but also a gateway to other Mekong Basin countries," it added.
