Border Marker 314 to determine maritime boundary with Vietnam

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) -Senior Minister Va Kimhong said Saturday that the border marker expected to be inaugurated by the prime ministers of Cambodia and Vietnam on June 24 would determine the maritime boundary between the two countries.

The senior minister, who is in charge of border affairs, said almost 90 percent of the work delineating the boundary had been completed with 280 of the 314 border markers erected.

Border Marker 314, the one expected to be inaugurated by the two prime ministers next week, is on the border between Kompong Trach district in Kampot province and Ha Tien district in Kien Giang province.

"Making 314 markers cost $16 million excluding the expense of transporting them to borders with nine Vietnamese provinces," Va Kimhong said. He noted that the border markers follow French colonial maps, the Cambodian constitution and King Norodom's dealings with Vietnam in 1873.

"There is sufficient evidence under the bilateral agreement signed by both parties, unlike what others say. We find it hard to talk to them," he said, apparently referring to opposition parties.
