Worker hospitalized after returning from Malaysia

KAMPONG CHHNANG (Cambodia Herald) – A worker returning from Malaysia has been hospitalized suffering from anxiety and confusion, a family member said.

Sok Sat told reporters that his 23-year-old niece Phat Kunthea, from Toul Samroung village in Krang Skar commune in Teok Phos district, spent two years working in Malaysia.

After returning on Wednesday, she started shouting and complaining that she had to work until 10 o'clock in the evening before having dinner.

"It was very hard to work there," she was quoted as saying, adding that she threatened to commit suicide when her employer sought to extend her two-year contract.

Sok Sat said his niece had been recruited to work in Malaysia by NCN Company in Russey Keo district in Phnom Penh. She saved $3,240 while working in the country.

Sam Chankea, president of the Kampong Chhnang branch of human rights group Adhoc, speculated that Phat Kunthea might have been threatened or forced to work overtime.

"The Ministry of Labor should investigate the case because a lot of Cambodian maids become crazy after returning from Malaysia," the human rights worker said.
