Thailand agrees its citizens are farming on Cambodian land

ARANYAPRATHET, Thailand (Cambodia Herald) - Thailand has  agreed that 37 Thai families are farming on 180 hectares of Cambodian land along the border, a military officer said.

Phat Pung told Cambodia Express News (CEN), an affiliate of The Cambodia Herald, that the agreement was reached in talks by the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Border Committee on Thursday.

As a result, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) is banning the 37 families from farming the land, he said. In response, however, the Thai army said it would impose a ban on Cambodians farming in Beong Trokunn and Ta Braya in Thailand.

Phat Pung said the area where the Thais were farming was documented by the two countries as Cambodian land and that the Cambodian army therefore had the right to take action. Other border areas, however, have not been discussed.

During the meeting in Aranyaprathet, located across the border from Poipet, the two sides agreed to respect and notify each other if they took actions along the border.

Thai authorities recently halted gasoline exports from Thailand and imports of rice from Cambodia.
