Profile: Dy Saveth

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH, 27th May 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Actress Dy Saveth looks at least 20 years younger than her 68 years. Since 1960, she has starred in more than 100 movies, notably "Kbon Chivit" and "Sne Brerub." She married another actor in 1964 and received a silver medal in 1967 for acting in films produced by the then Prince Norodom Sihanouk.

After leaving Cambodia in 1979, Dy Saveth returned to her homeland in 1993 to resume her acting career. She opened the MSL art club in 1997 and began training hundreds of acting students, some of whom are now stars.

In an interview with Cambodia Express News (CEN), an affiliate of The Cambodia Herald, Dy Saveth recalled that local films were very popular in Cambodia between 1960 and 1975. Although there are few cinemas today, she noted that technology enables movies to reach both domestic and international audiences.

The new generation of actors are skilled and look good, she says, noting that those from her generation who are still alive now live in France, the United States and Germany.

In addition to starring in hundreds of movies, Dy Saveth has worked for the Department of Cinema and Culture and has also been a judge in Freshie contests.
