Chut Wutty: was his killing deliberate or accidental?

Op-Ed by Anonymous author

Reference: Chut Wutty's memory spurs anti-logging campaign
“If people read the chain of events that happened on that day, they would know that it was a planned assassination” . . .
Chut Wutty's wife and three children

Most of what the BBC journalist Guy De Launey said was very correct, except I disagreed with him when he said Chut Wutty was not deliberately targeted.

If Guy read what happened to Wutty in the past in almost the same spot he would not have said that. I believe Wutty was targeted because he had been to the same place around last year and they (police and provincial officials) threatened that if he 'ever comes back', they would kill him.

Just after Wutty was killed, Radio Free Asia interviewed one of Wutty's friends, I think it was Chhim Savuth, who said that last year Wutty led a group of tribal people to protest against logging in almost the same spot where he was killed. The police tried to arrest him on the spot, but he escaped to Koh Kong town, and they followed him, pointed the guns at him and arrested him there. He was only released after the tribal people fought back to rescue him. After he was arrested and released, he was sternly warned that if he ever comes back to the site again, he would be killed.

If people read the chain of events that happened on that day, they would know that it was a planned assassination because, first the police, who came drunk and wearing masks, wanted him to go with them to see their boss in Koh Kong. This was a ploy to bring him with them and kill him on the way in the jungle somewhere. But luckily, Wutty did not agree to go with them. And the way he was stopped from leaving the area with threatening manner and the way someone ordered the 2 journalists to be killed as well suggested that it was a planned assassination.

So, I believe that Guy did not get all the facts before he made the assumption that Wutty was not deliberately targeted. I think they planned to kill him based on the threats they gave Wutty not to come back and based on the actual accounts of witnesses of what happened on that day, like someone ordered the 2 journalists to be killed as well.

Yes, I also believe Wutty was targeted for assassination. It was a premeditated murder. I think the journalist did not have a clear picture of what happened previously and what happened on that day. May Wutty's soul rest in peace.

If Cambodia is in full democracy like western countries such as France ,USA or UK,all of those like Hun Sen and Sok An who authorized the license for those powerful businessmen, would have been put in jail together with their henchmen. There is no way that westerners would tolerate all of those corrupted PM and their cronies to stay in power to play this cheap jokes again and again. We go to learn to see where the roots of the problems.

What's concerned me is that we are the public have not done enough too to high light,to find justice and to honor Chut Vuthy's death.
I watched video of his funeral,I felt sad, because I could only see a few prominent Khmer intellectuals and a few foreigners attended Chut Vuthy's funeral. There are lack of solidarity among Khmer living abroad, concerning about his death. There are almost 1.5 millions Cambodian living abroad .They could be a powerful political lobby or powerful force to change the country. Opposition politicians from all sides fail to use this event to get the public's support.I am sure that we could have done more to raise money and to mobilize people to joint the fight for justice and democracy.

I just wished that his funeral procession would have been led through the streets, in heart of the Capital Phnom Penh and would have been attended by thousand of students, ordinary people and most of all by all oppositions politicians standing along side of the roads throwing flowers to his coffin to glorify Vuthy's heroism.

If his funeral was in a nation's mind, that means the statement of denial of injustice and movement for change would have caused more damage to the dictator 'Hun' and its cronies. After all it was Hun's crime against his own country. So far,7 million hectares of farmland and forest have been sold for 99 years to Hanoi and it hasn't got any protest about this dirty businesses.

I really would like to appeal to someone, somewhere that has the power to raise some fund to support Chut Vuthy's family or perhaps, Khmerization could help making this to happen by raising some fund paying direct to his wife or his son through Paypal account?.

Don't let our hero down.

15 May 2012 11:31 AM. I agree with you. But as a Khmer also from overseas seeing the unchanged situation.

What Khmer need isnt more money or more funding, what Khmer need is responsiblity. Each one of us has the responsiblity to act. By act means make our voice be heard and clear, Hun Sen is killing the nation and getting away with murder.

Money isnt the solution.

During the struggle against the Apartheid in the 80's,led by Nelson Mandela,in South Africa,it was people outside the country, mainly from people who love justice, sent money to support black activists' victim families that were injured, imprisoned or killed by the white Apartheid regime. They were the one that liberated Nelson Mandela and his movement. It was those funds that was a powerful energy that uplifted the spirit of the struggle, and eventually it pull the white Apartheid down to its knees.

We should learn this lesson from real history. I can't think a better way to do it better than raising awareness and supporting our heroes. This is a real war between people and traitor. we got to stand together. Cradle of the power is in the hands of the people,if we know how to harvest it,otherwise gangster would steal it for their own dirty benefits. That what they have done.

Every Cambodian communities, living a abroad should held a mourning ceremony for Chut Vuthy, because his struggle is our struggle and his lost is our lost, his family is our family.Empathy and unity make us a better human and a stronger nation. This reaction from every community will protect us further from being abused. We certainly can't just stand and watch our braved-heart ones being killed in the daylight, without any reaction or fight back.

To glorify and to honor our heroes is to bring down the traitor.

The war must go on to free our country from this murky world.

Money could make things change:

More money for the families of our fallen heroes, whould suggest that we care for them and as a snow ball that would create more heroes.

A foundation would be set up with a clean commmittee to take care of the fund and use the fund to build libraries, labs, schools, forest research etc under the name of Hero Chut Vuthy.

Nelson Mendela was a good example, Middle east spring is another good one. People overseas provide fund for people inside to set up radio stations, newspapers, to set up underground links and teams, to adopt social media and technologies, etc.

Israel is a living example. The rich jews try all means to be high profile obbyists in the White House. Apart from that they ensure financial flow to their country to fight their neighbouring countries (during the 60s).

Our intellectuals could be high profile lobbyists in the White House to influence foreign policy. Our well-off compatriots would financially and spiritually help the poor heroes inside wall-less prinson in Cambodia today.

I strongly support both of your ideas about financial support, and responsability of each of us Khmer.
