Witness reveals Nuon Chea link to prison chief

Published: 19-Apr-12

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – A man who worked for Pol Pot's deputy Nuon Chea (pictured) said Thursday that his former boss exchanged letters with prison chief Kaing Guek Eav before the Khmer Rouge regime fell in 1979.

Former soldier Soth Troeung said Nuon Chea personally handed to him documents for the prison chief, also known as Duch and now serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity.

Testifying before the Khmer Rouge tribunal, he said the relationship between the two dated back to August 15, 1978.

The testimony by Soth Troeung came a day after Nuon Chea told the court that he had not been ot Duch’s boss and had "never ordered documents from him." The former Khmer Rouge leader, also known as Brother Number Two, also asserted he "didn’t have any chance to control Toul Sleng prison" and that Duch had confused him with Pol Pot in earlier testimony.
