Jeff Daigle, U.S. embassy Charge d'Affaires, cuts the ribbon as Mr Ruwan Hulugalle, the organiser of the fair, looks on.
PHNOM PENH, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The first United States-Cambodia education fair began here on Saturday, attracting hundreds of Cambodian student-visitors, according to the U.S. embassy in Phnom Penh.
"The two-day fair marks the first education fair to bring American education institutions to Cambodia to display their programs side-by-side with high-quality Cambodian education institutions to an audience of Cambodian students and their families," said a press release from the U.S. embassy in Phnom Penh.
The event, held at Diamond Island Exhibition Center, highlighted more than 20 U.S. and Cambodian institutions, and panel discussions on topics like scholarships, test preparation, student life, and more, it said.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Jeff Daigle, U.S. embassy Charge d'Affaires, said the U.S. embassy was proud to be a part of the 2012 U.S.-Cambodia education fair.
"The United States is committed to strengthening education ties with Cambodia, as is evident from the number of U.S. exhibitors present at this event," he said.
Pith Chamnan, a secretary of state at Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, said that it was the first time American education institutions visited Cambodia as a group to interact with Cambodian students and education institutions.
"The fair is a new development in Cambodia's relationship with the United States and is indeed a positive contribution towards a more skilled human resources base for the development of Cambodia, " he said.
Cambodia has 97 universities. Every year, some 100,000 students graduate high schools and seek for higher education, according to the ministry's reports.
