PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – Cambodia has the potential to become one of the world's largest rice exporters, Cabinet Minister Sok An says.
Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding establishing rice mills for Cambodian-Chinese agro-industrial companies Friday, he said the rice harvest was estimated to reach 8.78 million tonnes of paddy in 2011 and 2012.
An estimated 4.34 million tonnes of paddy or 2.78 million tonnes of milled rice will be available for export. That compares with exports of only 200,000 tonnes in 2011.
Sok An, who is also a deputy prime minister, said Cambodia had failed to make productive use of its paddy fields and that rice production had yet to reach optimal levels.
He said the government was encouraging both domestic and foreign companies to invest in agriculture.
Experts says Cambodia has the capacity to double its rice production by using better irrigation systems and expanding the area covered by paddy fields.
