Two Cambodia Daily journalists released after fatal shootings

MONDOL SEYMA, Koh Kong (Cambodia Herald) – Two female journalists from The Cambodia Daily were released Friday after being questioned over the deaths of a forestry activist and a military policeman the previous day, an activist said.

The activist said that the two journalists, including a foreigner, were ready to leave for Phnom Penh and declined to comment on the case.

Human Rights groups were meanwhile heading to Veal Bey, in Bak Klong commune in Koh Kong's Mondol Seyma district, to investigate the fatal shootings.

Chheng Sophors, of the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (Licadho), said the shootings occurred when military policemen In Rothana was trying to seize a camera from Chhut Vuthy, president of the Natural Resources Protection Group.

The bodies of the two men were sent to Koh Kong hospital on Friday to be examined, another activist said.

Bora Tino, an officer at Human Rights group Adhoc, said Chhuth Vuthy, 45, was shot on his right knee and that the bullet ricocheted to his stomach. In Rothana, 32, was shot in the left chest and right lung.

After being examined, the body of Chhuth Vuthy was sent to his house in Vihear Sour commune in Ksach Kandal district in Kandal province.
