Thailand investigates case of mutilated child beggar

Published: 07-Apr-12

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – Thailand is investigating the case of a seven-year-old boy, possibly Cambodian, who is believed to have been mutilated to beg for money, Kampuchea Thmey reported Saturday.

Koy Koung, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, was quoted as saying that Thai authorities had advised that the boy was found in the seaside resort of Pattaya.

The deaf mute child is illiterate and has a scar on his throat, he told the newspaper, adding that Thai authorities and the Cambodian Embassy were trying to find out if the scar resulted from an operation or originated at birth.

The spokesman said the nationality of the boy had not yet been confirmed.

Kampuchea Thmey recalled that a Thai website reported on March 19 that a seven-year-old deaf-mute child beggar from Cambodia had been found with a scar on his tongue.
