A miltary officer in Hun Sen’s bodyguard unit and a police officer were detained over a pair of unrelated shooting incidents in the capital on Sunday.

Kheng Tito, a national military police spokesman, said yesterday Colonel Duk Mab and Korng Veasna, a police officer working for the Ministry of Interior, had been detained by military police after weapons were illegally fired in the air on Sunday evening.

Colonel Duk Mab has since been released.

Seang Chhay, the commander of Meanchey district military police, said Colonel Duk Mab was detained by his forces at 5:30pm on Sunday after allegedly firing his weapon at a restaurant in Dangkor district.

The colonel had been released yesterday after being questioned, he said.

Seang Chhay said investigations had concluded that someone other than Duk Mab was responsible for firing the weapon and had escaped.

“The colonel was released, but we are still working on searching for, and arresting, the person who illegally fired on Sunday evening in Dangkor commune,” he said.

Meanwhile, Korng Veasna was detained by military police in Russey Keo district’s Prek Leap commune at 6:30 the same night.

An officer from Russey Keo district military police, who asked not be named, told the Post Korng Veasna was still detained for questioning at the Phnom Penh municipal military police headquarters.

“He got very drunk. He fired 10 bullets into the air, and he was arrested by military police forces after he had illegally fired at a restaurant in Prek Leap commune,” the officer said.

Ya Kim Y, the commander of Phnom Penh’s municipal military police, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Duk Mab and Korng Veasna were also unable to be reached for comment about the shooting allegations.
