PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – Prime Minister Hun Sen's strong support for former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is likely to pay off, the online edition of The Economist reported from Siem Reap Tuesday.
The report said the rally by Thaksin and his Thai Red Shirt supporters in Siem Reap over the New Year weekend was not only a testament to the popularity of the former prime minister, who has lived in exile for several years.
"It was perhaps even more of a reflection of the unusual friendship that has burgeoned between him and Mr Hun Sen over the past few years," the British newspaper said.
"Analysts on the Cambodian side have called Mr Hun Sen’s wrangling a gamble. But with a powerful Pheu Thai majority now set in place, it appears likely to pay off," it said, referring to the new ruling party in Thailand headed by Thaksin's sister.
The previous Thai government was involved in numerous clashes with Cambodian troops along the border between the two countries. Now, however, "at the border, things are the calmest they’ve been in years, and Thai trade continues to play a major role in Cambodia’s economy," the report said.
Moreover, "Mr Hun Sen can now count a good number of Thais among his fan base," it added. In addition to Red-Shirt cheers of "We Love Thaksin" and "Thaksin, Come Home," the report noted that a new one could be heard in Siem Reap over the weekend: "Thaksin, Hun Sen! Thaksin, Hun Sen!"

This is a good way to destroy Thailand: Divide and Conquer.
The whole Thailand belongs to Cambodia even though the Thais do not
want to admit it was so.
