The Malaysian Star

MALACCA: A 31-year-old Cambodian has been jailed two weeks and fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here for bribing an Immigration officer.

Judge Ahmad Sazali Omar meted out the sentence after Rumly Sari pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 yesterday.

Based on the statement of facts, Rumly, a hawker, had handed over RM230 to immigration officer Muhammad Fariza Yusoff, 25, during an operation at 11.15am on March 29 at Bemban in Jasin, near here.

The bribe was an inducement not to act against Rumly for overstaying in the country.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers Mohammed Heikal Ismail and Mohd Sa’ad Shukor appared on behalf of the prosecution while Rumly was unrepresented.

In an unrelated case in Bukit Mertajam, police are investigating a couple for murder after their Cambodian maid was found dead in the store of their shophouse in Taman Asas Murni near here.

The husband and wife, both in their 40s, were arrested yesterday.

Mey Sichan, 24, was found dead on a bed in the store on the second floor of the three-storey shophouse at about 4am on March 31.
