A CAMBODIAN opposition leader has urged the federal government to stop Australian companies from accepting land concessions in Cambodia, saying they are contributing to a pressing humanitarian crisis displacing up to one million people.
Mu Sochua, a representative of the Sam Rainsy Party and prominent human rights advocate, is in Australia to meet with the Cambodian community and Greens MPs about the issue.
She says the Cambodian government has given away 2.5 million hectares of land - 13.8 per cent of the country - to domestic and international agricultural firms, and an additional 1.9 million hectares to mining companies to explore for gold and other precious metals.
"Cambodia is for sale," she said. ''China is the biggest beneficiary of economic land concessions. Australian companies are in the north-east, in indigenous areas. We are talking about thousands of hectares of land.''
According to Cambodians for Resource Revenue Transparency, Australian mining companies have received at least 20 mining concessions spread over at least six companies, with licences to explore more than 760,000 hectares in total.
Australian companies Southern Gold and Indochine Mining Limited have some of the biggest stakes in the country, with Indochine licensed to explore 431,000 hectares.
Ms Mu said it was unclear how many Australian agricultural firms were operating in Cambodia, but that Australia had long invested in the sector.

If you ever visit Siem Riep, visit all the empty land. If you ever ask the local and the beggars living on garbage just outside the Siem Riep Town, they will tell you those empty land belongs to the CPP officals using as investment to sell to the Korean.
Given concession land to Australian Company is much much better than gave concession land to Vietnam, Thailand, Sri lanka or Bangladesh.
Australian company will bring technology and expertist know how to Cambodia and use local labour. Australia will pay fairly compensation to people who effected or will leave people as it is, Cambodian can sue the Australian Company in Australian court.
Mrs Musochua should prevent Vietnamese, Thais, and other third world country who want to have concession land instead of Australia, USA and Western Europ.
Vietnamese, Thais, other third world company who want forest land in order to log the forest and sale for their profit and after the forest has gone they will sale the company to other company or they abandon their investmet by saying that the land infertile was unable to grow crop.
You should watch out who can or can not have the concession land if Australian company can not has concession land Mr Hun Sen will give the concession land to Vietnamese company altogether.

Giving land concession to Australian companies is much better than giving them to Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai companies because Australian companies are law-abiding and those Viet, Thai or Chinese companies are crooked companies. They don't care about Cambodia or Cambodians or environmental disasters, they just want profits only.

land concession of any kids is bad if they use the land for wrong reasons like mining or logging to destroy environs,mining will creates poison with mercury,lead and more toxic elements can causes more harm to khmers people health in the long haul,if they don't d o it right...
