Sam Rainsy seeks help from UN to return to Cambodia

Published: 23-Mar-12

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – Opposition leader Sam Rainsy (pictured) has recently sought help from the United Nations to enable him to return to Cambodia, a source said Friday.

During a meeting in New York, the source said that Sam Rainsy also urged UN officials not to send observers to Cambodia’s upcoming commune elections if he is not in the country.

Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit at the Council of Ministers, said the UN "wouldn’t be interested in Sam Rainsy calling for intervention.”

He added that Sam Rainsy was no longer a lawmaker and had lost international trust.

Sam Rainsy was sentenced to 14 years in jail in 2009 for uprooting border posts and is now in exile.
