Cambodian Police Name Mayor as Suspect in Shootings [The shooter was the governor of Bavet]

Cambodian authorities have named the mayor of a small border town as the prime suspect in the shooting of three factory workers who were wounded last week as they protested for higher pay and better working conditions.

Interior Minister Sar Kheng (pictured) confirmed the suspect's identity to reporters Thursday in Phnom Penh.

Witnesses say the suspect stepped out of a car, pulled a handgun from his waist and opened fire on a crowd of more than 1,000 protesters in the central city of Svay Rieng.

Authorities say the three workers at the local sports factory remained hospitalized on Thursday. The plant makes sportswear for the international shoe manufacturer Puma.

An Interior Ministry spokesman told VOA's Khmer service that results of the police investigation have been submitted to court authorities in Svay Rieng.

But police say the court has not yet ordered the arrest of the suspect, identified as Bavet town Mayor Chhouk Bandit.

Question time, Mr Sar Kheng.

Why did it take your government so long to catch the suspect? even though you said your government have gathered the evidence over a week earlier?

Your government spokemen said the suspect caught was a civilian, so how could he be a civilian when he was siding with the police officers at the time of the shooting, and the police officers just watched him shoot the protesters then allowing him to flee the scenes? Did one of the police officers drove his Lexus to his house afterward or did he drove the Lexus to his hidout villa?

If the suspect is a civilian as your spokemen have stated to the media, why does your government allow the civilian to own firearms and guns, most of all, Governor of Bavet is a government official working under CPP, why is he allowed to carry guns at all?

Aus.

It seems your question isn't really a genuine question but a stepping stone for you to make a point you're trying to get across.

Ask real question. Then, maybe, you'll get some real answer.

The answer is very simple: because the victims are weak people and are Grass root people from which the current powerful rulers emerge and seem to forget it, this scandal has been dragged and dragged...

If the victims were their children or relatives or friends...the shooter would have been arrested within seconds.

No surprise! It's the Cambodian RULE of Law.

I doubt that the shooter will never be brought to justice. Being a provincial governor, this guy must have good thick skin and support from the powerful cpp people in Phnom Penh that may include hun sen himself. Will Sar Kheng dare to challenge hun sen to arrest this man if the shooter happened to be hun sen's good friend? By the way sar kheng does nook healthy just by looking on the complexion of his facial skin.
