Cambodian Parliamentarians Elects Two Senators

AKP Phnom Penh, March 13, 2012 –Two of the 12 candidates were voted yesterday to be senators of the third legislature in a National Assembly’s meeting presided over by its President Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin.

Eighty two (82) out of 102 lawmakers present voted for Samdech Preah Ream Norodom Bopha Devi, and Samdech Sisowath Chivoan Monirak as senators.

The National Assembly also announced to acknowledge its six new members to replace those who have passed away and resigned.

There are in total 61 senators, of them two have been appointed by the King, two by the National Assembly and the 57 others elected by the 123 Members of Parliament and 11,353 commune councilors nationwide.

In the election for the third legislature of the Senate held on Jan. 29, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won 46 seats and the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) won the remaining 11 seats. The term for senators is six years.

In addition, the National Assembly approved the three-chapter draft law on government spending in 2010 by 84 of 99 lawmakers present.

Note: King Sihamoni had just appointed two senators, Oum Manorine, who is the brother-in-law of ex-King Sihanouk and Mr. Ieu Pannakar, who is the brother-in-law of Oum Manorine and a son of Ieu Keuss, president of the Democrat Party who was killed in a grenade attack in his office in 1950.
