Vietnam - Cambodia trade exchange thrives

Nhan Dan – The import-export turnover between Vietnam and Cambodia has risen remarkably in the past few years, from US$1.78 billion in 2010 (up 33.6% compared to 2009) to approximately US$2.8 billion in 2011 (a year-on-year increase of 55%).

Cambodia is one of the markets with which Vietnam enjoys a trade surplus with US$1.3 billion in 2010 and US$2 billion in 2011. The surplus contributed to reducing the national trade deficit.

After the global economic recession and financial crisis, the Cambodian economy has rebounded with an increase of market volume. Cambodian consumers have the trend of choosing Vietnamese goods over Thai goods, which have reasonable price and improved quality. The import turnover of Vietnamese goods to Cambodia has continuously increased.

Vietnamese trade fairs are held annually in Cambodia with various trade promotion activities. In addition, on working visits to Cambodia, leaders of Vietnam’s industries and sectors are often accompanied by enterprises in order to sign trade deals and establish trade relations with Cambodia partners.

The Multilateral Trade Assistance project (EU-Vietnam MUTRAP III) also held an online forum on Cambodian markets to help Vietnamese businesses have a thorough grasp of the country’s market and a sustainable development orientation.

There are many factors that facilitate two-way trade between Vietnam and Cambodia including the convenient traffic route linking ten border provinces of Vietnam with nine border provinces of Cambodia. The two countries also share ten international border gates along with a waterway channel. In addition, the distance between Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City to Cambodia's capital city of Phnom Penh is only 230km.

Many measures have been devised to further boost the growth of two-way trade between the two countries. Vietnamese businesses must continuously enhance the quality of their goods and promote their brands and compete with other rivals in the Cambodian market.

They must also grasp import-export procedures of the neighbouring country and rationalise their transportation system. Trade promotion activities and trade fairs of Vietnam in Cambodia should be improved to achieve more effective outcome.

It is also necessary for Vietnamese businesses to co-operate with overseas Vietnamese partners in Cambodia to penetrate local distribution channels.

Infrastructure to serve the two-way trade activities need to improve such as the highway linking Can Tho, An Giang and Phnom Penh; Vam Cong and Cao Lanh bridges; An Giang airport; Tinh Bien, Vinh Xuong and Khanh Binh border gates; My Thoi international seaport and others.

The two countries should promote the co-ordination to prevent smuggling and the sale of forbidden and counterfeit goods in order to maintain prestige as well as protect goods' trademarks of both countries.

1:36 pm, just like your Uncle Ho Chi Minh and every Vietnames way of thinking out there, " make yourself richer and your country bigger by taking over your neighbors." This what lead Vietnam to having very little or no neighborly friends. Cambodia and Vietnam is 2 seperate animals. Cambodia's co-operation with Vietnam will never become what you wished to be. What appear to be Cambodia and Vietnam co-operation are Hanoi government arm-twisting Phnom Penh goverment to follow. In actuality, the people of Cambodia despise and very bitter of Vietnamese government policy toward Cambodia. If you know anything about the history, you should understand. Beside Thailand, Cambodia's worst enemy is Vietnam. Cambodia can forgive but not forget. That's one thing you must know about Khmer.
