PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - The Cambodian Bar Association nominated seven associate lawyers Thursday to defend opposition party lawyer Choung Chou Ngy at his upcoming court hearing.
Spokesman Yim Sary said the lawyers would "take very good care" and ensure the "professionalism" of their client, who the association criticized earlier in the week for professional misconduct.
The Kandal Provincial Court has accused Choung Chou Ngy and opposition Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Chan Cheng of aiding and abetting opposition activist Mean Peng to escape from Kandal prison on September 23.
Choung Chou Ngy is due to appear in court on Wednesday next week and Chan Cheng on Thursday.
If found guilty, they face between one and three years in prison.
The seven lawyers named to defend Choung Cou Ngy include Puth Theavy, Lo Suthy, Liv Sovanna, Rous Manin, Pon Panha, Yim Sary and another who was not identified.
