7th January: Liberation or Invasion Day?

Op-Ed by Mara M.M.

Re: January 7 and the Khmer Rouge Tribunal

We are perhaps in a predicament circumstances for us all, Cambodian. "We damn if we do and We damn if we don't", in relation to the 7th January Day.

Let all of us accept that the Pol Pot regime was the most ravaging and plundering to any mankind unimaginable in the history of the world we lived in, and in particularly, historically and unfortunately, to our people. Anyone who come to our rescues at the time would be cordially receptive by any of us.

On the other hand, and historically, there were correlations between the Vietnamese and our Cambodian people and particularly the Vietnamese and the Khmer Rouge since the very early establishment of the Khmer Rouge by King Sihanouk. What kind of sweetheart deals our leaders had with the Vietnamese at the time? Unfortunately, for our Cambodian people, we will never know the truth, we can only speculate.

Then came the January 7, 1979, the day some called invasion and occupation of the Vietnamese, the plans by the Vietnamese government that they engraved in stone for a very long time and set for action as an opportunity to devour our country and to exterminate our people, and that was the time for them, January 7, 1979. Of course, to the world and to a few of us, we see January 7 as a liberation day and the Vietnamese as the "Liberator", the rescuer of our people from the most horrific regime in the world's history, and we should endlessly thankful to the Vietnamese people and their government.

Now, whether one agrees or to disagrees, to support or to oppose to the commemoration of January 7 as a liberation day, is subject to individual's opinion and interpretation.

I am a younger generation, I will never know the truth about our history and so do millions of our people, about the correlations, the agreements, and the history between us and the Vietnamese. But one thing that I am sure of that is "the Vietnamese Never Had Good Intention Toward Us", they always practiced deception on our innocent Khmers for their own benefits.

But again, I think whether one supports or opposes the 7th January is irrelevant. The significant matter is the future of our country and people. Can we all start to trust each others? Can we all start to work with each others? Can we learn from our mistakes of the past for the better? Can we stop any influences from any foreign countries?

If we're all starting to implement these agenda and not to sway from any distraction, WE, KHMER WILL SURVIVE.

7 th january, 1979 were both liberation and invasion because it was involved with Khmer and VN troops.
If VN troops only , it was tentamount to invasion but Heng Samrin troops were there at that time although they were supported by VN.

The event has passed 30+ years ago, many people has a good idea and good understanding about it like Mara M.M. But some still have no clue or so pretentious like the 1st and 2nd commentators, these 2 persons deserve to be called no-brained nuts.
I even suspect that both comments were made by the same one stupid and pretentious idiot.
