My 2 cents worth of advice for PM Hun Sen

By Anonymous

Re: Hun Sen’s Next Election

Dear PM Hun Sen, you have done a decent job of providing peace and stability for Cambodia for the last decade or so.

You are at the helm of Cambodia longer than Sihanouk of Sangkum Reastr Niyum, Lon Nol of the Khmer Republic, Pol Pot of Democratic Kampuchea and Norodom Ranariddh of the Funcinpec-led government.

So, which one of the 3 following statements is best described your political leadership?

1-You are a Khmer Neak Mean Bunn (A Khmer with divine powers) who is destined by our nation's fate to come and help Khmers during the tough and rough time.
2- You are an astute politician who know how to weather the political storm by your own ability with or without some help from the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), or
3-You are nothing but a Viet puppet who could not even decide when to retire to enjoy good a private citizen's life if the Viet, your master, will not allow you to do so.

I know you and I hate the 3rd statement for a good reason. Now you can make a silent reply for yourself and for the benefit of our nation.

My advice to you is to allow and encourage your son, Hun Manet, to create a new political party to distance himself from any Viet affiliations that you and your CPP might have entangled with.

Have faith in your son and in the whole of the Khmer population. You and CPP name should retire after the next election, and for now you should tone down the importance of the "7th January Victory Day" because no Khmer government before yours have ever conceded Koh Tral to the Viets.

I am a realist who rather smirk at the extremist Khmers who wanted to have Khmers killed in the war with the Viets and Thais in a bid to gain back Khmer lost territory for a fewer Khmers to live on a bigger land!? What an awesome beefy brain! I don't think Khmers who went to work in Thailand wanted to swallow Thai territory and by the same token I don't think Viet immigrants living in Cambodia wanted to swallow ours, it's just the damn economy which drive the needs. But Khmers should not be so careless of the threat that would enable the bigger fishes (Vietnam and Thailand) to eat the smaller one (Cambodia) alive.

To the minds of the Khmer elites, I'd like to say this: develop the country to make it stronger, maintain your good position as an opposition because it is beneficial that way rather than to stay off position. Do not fight each other because you hate Khmer enemies, not Khmers, so it's better to have no internal fight and try to have none of the enemies around Cambodia.

"no Khmer government before yours have ever conceded Koh Tral to the Viets."

You're right. No Khmer government before Hun Sen's did that. However, they all just created a scenario where the loss of Kos Tral was inevitable.

I've been to Kos Tral in 2011 and it was no an easy thing to know that you're walking on a piece of land that used to belong to your country not that long ago.

But, the people running the country today did not create the situation where they had to cede Kos Tral to Vietnam. The people that run the country before them did.

We inherited a situation created by the previous leaders.

Kos Tral is once again a reminder of what happens when Khmer fight Khmer. People don't help you for free.

It's true that Khmer leaders of previous generations were unable to protect Koh Tral from being annexed by Vietnam due to internal fighting and Cambodia's weaknesses. However, they, including Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge, have steadfastly maintained that Koh Tral belong to Cambodia, where as the CPP, Hun Sen in particular, have signed off Koh Tral to Vietnam in a series of illegal treaties, including the 1985 treaty which was forcibly ratified in 2005 under a supplemental treaty. It is undeniable that Koh Tral is firmly in Vietnam's control, but at least our present leaders, if they are patriotic enough, should publicly declare that Cambodia has ownership claim to the island, not to give it up and acknowledged Vietnam's control as a fait accompli as the CPP leaders have done.
A similar case is Preah Vihear temple. If Sihanouk and the government at that time did not fight hard by taking it to the international court in 1959, Cambodia would have no chance of reclaiming it back in 1962and Thailand's control over the temple would have become a fait accompli. Cambodia should never try to take Koh Tral by force because it can't, but, by the same token, Cambodia should not give it to Vietnam under any treaty, especially the treaty that was signed by Hun Sen in 1985 and ratified in 2005.

What is about the French map ?

Does the map show which side the island is on ??

I don't think the nation treaty can overide the legal map of the nation. But, I can be wrong.

Can any one produce the legal document to show that the island is belong to Cambodia ????

We can't listen to the rumors now, we have to have legal document to claim it back.

Cambodia before taken over by the French, was completely taken over by Thai and Vietnam. By fate or whatever, the French colonized Vietnam and by this they absorbed the eastern part of Cambodia. Then they kicked the Thai out of the west. Then they colonized the whole Indochina. You can say that the whole South Vietnam and the Kol Trol was Khmer's land or if you look from their perspective from pre-French colonization, they were already in youns' lab grab. In 1954 when France gave up control of Indochina, they divided Inchochina into the three countries. All maps and signatures were agreed and signed by the 3 countries including other super powers. We can blame our representatives back then.

Bullshit.. It's not right to put blame on our leaders back before Cambodia lost Kampuchea Krom 1949. Our leaders did their best to keep Khmer territory but Viet on the other hand, have much more advantages of gaining favors from France. Another word, Viet leaders were good pleasers to the colonial French master. Why do you think Viet languages were romanized and Catholism was the chosen faith for the Viet? To bow down to the French master of course. That is catching a small fish for bait to catch a bigger fish. That bigger fish is Kampuchea Krom of course. In return, the Viet leaders took advantage of those favors in a very big way.

Vietnam's intention has always to achieve its unity by incorporating Kampuchea Krom(Cochinchina)to its territory when the opportunity is given. In 1945, a new young King Norodom Sihanouk with little political experience, suggested the formation of a Khmer-Viet border demarcation. The government of Hanoi accepted in 1945 during Japanese occupation of Indochina, however, King Bao Dai of south Vietnam did not. After the Japanese was defeated, France re-colonized Indochina. Hanoi government ruled by Ho Chi Min and King Bao Dai was in disagreement. After they split, France was faced with the demand of King Bao Dai to have all Viet territory from Tonkin, Annam and Cochinchina into on single state. King Sihanouk disapproved of this and started the negotiation with France and Vietnam. At the end, France ignored King Sihanouk plead and signed Kampuchea Krom to King Bao Dai on March 8, 1949 anyway. King Sihanouk fiercely protest against France's decision of favoring King Bao Dai. He brought up this issue to French parliament and in return Franco-Khmer Treaty was signed in 1949. The treaty was the reiteration the disapproval of Cambodia losing Kampuchea Krom to Vietnam. Cambodia reserve the right to further argue about this case if necessary.

Cambodia still can take this issue to international court however, Sihanouk is no longer a king, if he did, he would have done it. So his son King Sihamoni was replaced and he's powerless to do anything. Have you ever wonder why his son replaced him so hastly? You can almost guess who's behind it. Anyway, at the same time, Hun Sen is Hanoi's pet, which only make it much more powerless to argue about Kampuchea Krom. Cambodia got slammed hard by Viet deception. Khmer must understand Youn psychology. Don't think they're done with Khmer yet. Two millions Khmer deaths by Khmer Rouge? I doubt it was done by Pol Pot of Khmer Rouge alone. Think about it.

Thanks so much for the history lesson. Damn the French.

Any insight these points:
1. The quick transfer of kingship to his son King Sihamoni.
2. "Don't think they're done with Khmer yet"
