CLARKEFIELD will stamp itself on the musical map with an inaugural festival in March.

Until now, famous for its resident ghosts, the 154-year-old bluestone Coach and Horses Inn will be very much alive with a festival line-up featuring Melbourne musical stalwarts such as Kim Salmon and Nick Barker.

And it’s a case of the more the merrier for organisers who will direct proceeds from the concert to the Cambodian Kids Foundation (CKF), a Woodend-based charity building a school in Cambodia.

Hotel licensee Paul Levey said it was a spontaneous decision to hold the March 18 festival.

His daughter Nicole has been fundraising for the CKF while he and partner Michelle have been involved in Ride For The Kids, a local charity bike ride that supports CKF’s work.

“A few members from the foundation were around discussing a few things at the pub when the idea came up and we were away,” Mr Levey said. “We had 1500 for the pub’s 150th a few years back but it was in the drought and was a dust bowl but that’s not an issue now and it will be good for Clarkefield.”

Lincoln MacKinnon, who has organised the bands for the day, said a swag of musicians jumped at the chance to take part.

“We’ve got a line-up together quickly and there would have been a few more if they weren’t off touring,” Mr MacKinnon said.

Mr MacKinnon, who is travelling to Cambodia to make a documentary about CKF’s work, said the $100,000 school was close to completion.

The festival is on Saturday, March 18 from noon-9.30pm, $20 adults, children under 12 free.
