The grandeur and brilliance of Angkor recall an age of national harmony and efflorescence in civic sphere and in creative culture that embody the national soul and dignity despite Cambodia's recent nightmares and turmoils. Tourists and travelers - accustomed to ghastly images of genocide portrayed in the media - struggle to comprehend the country's current abysmal status in light of its more civilised and distinguished past - School of Vice.

Ordinary Khmer 'citizens' have no rights as humans to speak of some three decades after having been freed from the clutches of genocide in 1979. The ruling party has generally sought to bind citizens' allegiance to itself by offering membership based privileges as 'carrots' in token measure, and by threatening them with the 'stick' of disenfranchisement should their loyalty or allegiance falter. However, in recent years even steadfast loyalty to the ruling CPP has not been enough to exempt many from being tossed off their lands and properties as real estate speculation gathers momentum among tycoons and members of the political elite - School of Vice.
Listening to In Yeng's songs brings back a lot of good souvenirs of places, friends and friendship in our old Cambodia before the civil wars.
Cambodia has suffered and continues to suffer because of her incompetent, irresponsible and power-hungry leaders!
Looking back into the past 50 years or so and looking at the current political situations, drama and abuses of power and justice plus the arrogance on the part of the current administration in Cambodia, I feel certainly sad and quite disappointed with so many Cambodian political leaders of the past and present who had and have continuously abused the trust of the people and treat them more or less like disposable objects in their business deals with local tycoons and foreigners, either next door or far away, with the sole purpose of maintaining their grips on power and handing it down later to their own flesh in the same way or manner North Korea is doing.
Cambodia is not a property of one Khmer or a group of Khmer people. Let us not forget that Cambodia belongs to all Cambodians who died in the past, live in the present and shall be born in the future. Gaining access to power under the banner of leadership either through the ballot box or force gives one no right to treat her as a personal belonging.
Unity and certainly the willingness to express the desire for changes are rare commodities in Cambodia among her children, especially the middle class who is usually unwilling or indifferent to the concerns of their much poorer brothers and sisters who certainly need the assistance in fighting the injustice of being removed from their homes and land by the government of PM Hun Sen .
What will the future of Cambodia look like, shall we say 30 years from now? Who would dare to guess?
Hopefully the younger generation of Cambodians shall aspire after knowledge and education to the point that they will become informed and willingly participating citizens and thus are willing to hold their usually stupid, arrogant and selfish leaders accountable for their wrong actions and do not put up any more with such irresponsibility and arrogance on the part of those who call themselves Samdach and leaders.

No suprise or don't be suprise because this is how Khmers are. They are in power to make profits by killing other Khmers. This is nothing news in Srok Khmer. It has been like this for centuries. ...
I am ashamed to be Khmer, lucky for me, I lived in Massachusetts, USA now....good luck to all Khmers still living in Cambodia.
Those CPP politicians has no shamed at all. They are selling Cambodia to the Chinese or the Viet as long as they give them more money.
How rich do you want to be? Acording to the Forb Magazine, Hun Sen worth about 6.5 billion dollars and most Khmers make about .25 cent or .50 cent a day....
There will be ways to take back those $6.5 billion may be more from those tycoons. Hopefully in the next election. Dary of USA.
I am from Australia. I am ashamed to be a Khmer. I am ashamed of the government. I am ashamed that as a Khmer i allow the government to kill our people, alienated the nation from our resources and land, and forcing the nation to be crippled and live in poverty.
I am ashamed of Khmer in Australia. I am ashamed that they care little about the progress of the nation. I am ashamed that they prefer to brag to their Australian friends about how much fun they have when visiting Cambodia.
Should i be proud of being a Khmer?
1 December 2011 7:17 PM - The question is, are you Vietcong? You comment is offending Khmer people.
How many Vietnamese folks (both illegal and legal residents) in Khmer/Cambodian society? Do you know yourself as a Vietnamese who can speak and write Khmer language and who was in Cambodia as Vietnamese born? Just be careful with your mouth pieces of shitting you brought in front of everyone to believe the only Khmer people who are stupid and dumb?
You need to look at the Vietnamese-Khmer leaders who are Hun Sen's Comrades and Yuon/Vietnamese officials are behind Hun Sen and creating the corruption in the Country of Khmer. You and your Vietnamese folks were born in Cambodia did not care when you and your Yuon/Vietnamese officials in Cambodia have taken advantage of opportunities to lead Cambodia and advise Hun Sen what to do to mislead Cambodia and mistreat Cambodian/Khmer people and other ethnicities.
You are ridiculous!
Guys, you can say that you are ashamed of the behaviors of Khmer leaders, but there no need to be ashamed to be Khmer if you really love Khmer. No matter where we live, we will always be Khmers and should be proud to be Khmers. However, we can say that the corrupt behaviors of our Khmer leaders are shameful to all Khmers because they don't love Khmers, only love their pockets.

Didn't you read what he said: "I am ashamed that as a Khmer i allow the government to kill our people, alienated the nation from our resources and land, and forcing the nation to be crippled and live in poverty..."
You're the real Vietcong.

I am ashamed of being a Khmer. I am ashamed of Khmer like who who hates the Viet. Because i hate being a Khmer means i am a Viet spy?
This is why Khmer are so dumb and is a disgrace to the South East Asians. With your mentality, khmer will always be poor and dumb because you keep blaming everyone but yourself.
Keep blaming the Viet and the Siems. DUMB khmer.. oh also keep voting for dictator Hun Sen DUMB Khmer.
Very nice post on leadership. I find this post very informative. Many thanks for sharing this experience.
Future Leader
For the bloggers above, Khmer leaders are foreign leaders like Vietcong/Yuon themselves who have misled Cambodia and who do not care about the suffer and pain of Khmer people when it comes to the weakness and poor/powerlessness of innocent Khmer people. Just because it is so unfortunate for those poor and powerless Khmer people who do not know what to do with their bare hands. The leaders of Cambodia are alienated from mostly Communist Vietcong. Don't call Khmer people dumb because Vietcong master-minded folks who manipulated Khmer leaders to be this and to be that just because of easy trick of Vietcong. For examples, ugly Khmer leaders who love pretty Yuon womenmanipulating stupid Khmer leaders have weakness for those pretty Yuon females. That is why the country failed apart....It is complicate more than that. Cambodia is lack of reliable educations or stuck because of foreign controls coming from Communist Vietnam.
2 December 2011 3:08 AM,
Your comment is generalizing all Khmer people are dumb. That doesn't make sense. It is OK you can call yourself dumb, but don't call all Khmer people dumb. We wish you should call Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Chea Sim including other Yuon-Khmer/Vietcong leaders under CPP regime like Sok An, Chea Leang, Nguon Nhel, Hor Nam Hong and you name it.
It is not fair to call bad names "Dumb" over innocent and poor Khmer people and educated Khmer leaders who are different from Hun Sen.
