PHNOM PENH, (Cambodia Herald) - Opposition lawmakers from the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) and the Human Rights Party (HRP) walked out of the National Assembly Tuesday after it voted to suspend the immunity of an SRP lawmaker to pay the way for a provincial court to proceed in a case against him.
Out of 97 votes cast, 88 supported the lifting of Chan Cheng's parliamentary immunity.
National Assembly President Heng Samrin said the move was requested by the Kandal Provincial Court and the Ministry of Justice. The court has charged Chan Cheng (pictured) with helping another party member, Meas Peng, to escape from a prison in Kandal province on September 23.
After the suspension, SRP and HRP lawmakers walked out of the National Assembly meeting. Senior SRP lawmaker Son Chhay said the decision was made to please the ruling Cambodian People's Party and was "politically motivated" as well as a "bid to suppress the opposition" parties. "It's a shame for all MPs," he said.
