PHNOM PENH, (CEN) - Cambodia won't send people to work in Malaysia until the two countries sign a memorandum of understanding on the recruitment of workers, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Koy Kuong said Thursday.
"The MOU intends to protect Cambodian workers from being abused and working without breaks," he added. "We can no longer send our workers to work in Malaysia until Malaysia agrees on a memorandum of understanding."
During a meeting in Bali last month, Foreign Minister Hor Nam Hong called on Malaysia to sign an MOU on recruiting Cambodians but has not yet received a reply, the spokesman said.
In October, Prime Minister Hun Sen issued an order to postpone recruiting and sending maids to Malaysia amid negative reports about working conditions including employer abuse.
Such reports have prompted parents of maids working in Malaysia to seek government help to bring their daughters home.
