Four Hillsboro firefighters are preparing to travel together across the globe this weekend to Cambodia, where they'll stay for the next two weeks.

They're not going on the department's dime, but it's not exactly a vacation for the firefighters. As part of a team for Medical Teams International, they're traveling to the country's Kampong Cham province, they say, to help its troubled, virtually non-existent emergency medical services system.

Hillsboro Fire Administrative Chief Scott Malone, Lt. Mark Gregg, Firefighter Brent Wellington and Engineer Matt Dobbin will leave Saturday for their mission. The trip is on the firefighters' own time.

"It's all out of pocket," Malone said. "Zero cost to tax payers." But, he said, the trip is spendy – about $2,000 per person – so team members are looking for donations.

The group will be the first of three from Hillsboro Fire & Rescue – which recently formed a partnership with Medical Teams International – to deploy to Cambodia. Additional trips are planned for February and May. Read the full article, see more pictures and links at The Oregonian.
