CCHR Releases Interactive Map to Help Raise Awareness of Community Concerns in Cambodia

Dear all,

CCHR Press Release- Phnom Penh, 27 November 2011

CCHR Releases Interactive Map to Help Raise Awareness of Community Concerns in Cambodia

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”), a non-aligned, independent, non-governmental organization (“NGO”) that works to promote and protect democracy and respect for human rights throughout Cambodia, is pleased to announce today – 27 November 2011 – the publication of an interactive map outlining public forums conducted by CCHR as part of our Public Forums Project during the period January 2009 – September 2011: the Public Forum Map. It is hoped that this map will make information related to Forums more accessible and raise awareness of the concerns raised by communities, particularly in the context of land disputes.

In 2002, CCHR introduced the public forum model to Cambodia. At these events community members can voice any concerns, suggestions and questions they have to a panel of guest speakers. CCHR invites parliamentarians, representatives from political parties, state authorities and human rights workers amongst others to sit on these panels. The public forums are an important alternative dispute resolution mechanism for vulnerable and marginalized communities who are the subject of human rights violations – often related to land – that are generally the result of business practices by powerful and well-connected private companies and individuals. The public forums also represent one of few truly democratic platforms that ordinary people can engage with and experience in Cambodia.

The purpose of the Public Forum Map is to give provide detailed information about the forums conducted by CCHR throughout the country, including the date and location of a specific forum, the identity of guest speakers, the number of participants and, most importantly, the issues raised by those who attended the forum. Links to audio and video footage of the forums are also provided.

The Public Forum Map is available at the following link: http://www.cchrcambodia.org/publicforummap/

Soun Bunthoeun, Project Officer of Training and Public Forum Project, commented on the launch of the interactive map:

“I am delighted to announce the launch of the Public Forum Map as it gives CCHR an opportunity to bring to a wider audience the work that the Public Forum’s Team undertake in communities across Cambodia. The Forums provide communities – particularly vulnerable and marginalized communities that are the victim of land rights violations – with the opportunity to set their own agenda by raising issues of concern that affect their day-to-day lives. I truly believe that by mapping this information, by giving further voice to those who find it most difficult to be heard, we can help to ensure that the rights of marginalized communities across the country are respected and protected.”
