AKP Phnom Penh, October 21, 2011 –The French government has donated US$80,000 to the French Red Cross to help Cambodian flood victims.
“Faced with major flooding which currently affecting the Kingdom of Cambodia, France has decided to help its people by supporting the work of the French Red Cross in Kampong Thom, one of the most affected provinces,” said a press release of the French Embassy in Cambodia issued on Thursday.
“An assistance of US$80,000 will aim at funding a project covering needs of flood victims in that province, indicated the press release, adding that 1,800 families will get food aid for a period of one month and will receive emergency kits to face up to this critical situation,” it said.
Earlier on Oct. 17, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of France H.E. Alain Juppé sent a letter to Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Hor Namhong, expressing his emotion and sympathy before the loss of lives and damage caused by the devastating floods.
“On behalf of France, I would like to express my sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and their loved ones,” he said.
Cambodia has been suffered by flash floods since early August and up to now at least 247 people have been killed and some 390,000 ha of paddy rice have been flooded, of which over 190,000 ha have been completely destroyed.
