Phnom Penh (DPA)- Police have arrested four men who allegedly fleeced villagers of thousands of dollars in a scam involving small stone cows and animal bones with supposedly magical properties, media reported Thursday.
The men were detained Tuesday in the south-western province of Kampot, the Phnom Penh Post newspaper said.
Kampot's deputy provincial justice chief, Sao Samoeun, said the four deceived villagers into parting with cash for items they claimed would bring good luck.
'One suspect would dial a random number and inform the villager that they were attempting to sell magical objects, and if the villager could help them find buyers then they would pay them for their efforts,' he told the Post.
The same villager would then receive another call from one of the four, claiming he wanted to buy magical objects.
After the unsuspecting villager arranged the deal, the supposed buyer would ask him to front the money for him, claiming poverty, and saying the villager could hang on to the object as collateral.
Sao Samoeun said some villagers had parted with up to 4,000 dollars in the scam, and were left with near worthless bits of bone or carved stone.
Belief in the supernatural is widespread in the predominantly Buddhist nation.
