SAM RAINSY IN TUNISIA TO PREPARE PEOPLE POWER IN CAMBODIA
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy (pictured) arrived today in Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia, in North Africa, for a three-day visit during which he will meet with local and international activists from various
political and social backgrounds who have successfully fought for a regime change in this country through an unprecedented popular uprising that triggered the Arab Spring or Jasmine Revolution seven months ago.
The ongoing peaceful transition towards freedom and democracy in Tunisia is an inspiration for the whole world, especially countries under dictatorship such as Cambodia that is awaiting a Lotus Revolution with the same historical results.
In his address at a Congress of Liberal International on 19 June 2011 in Manila, The Philippines, Sam Rainsy was quoted as saying, “The worst regimes in terms of crimes and impunity are those whose autocratic leaders have been in power for the longest period of time,” and he then reportedly called for the formation of a “Peoples’ alliance for the removal of multi-decade dictators.” He associated Cambodia’s Hun Sen (32 years in power) with Tunisia’s Ben Ali (removed after 24 years in power), Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak (removed after 30 years in power), Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi (to be removed after 42 years in power), Yemen’s Ali Abdullah Saleh (to be removed after 33 years in power) and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad (to be removed after 40 years of dictatorship including his father Hafez al-Assad’s 29-year reign).

Cambodia is much different from all of those countries that you described Mr. Sam Rainsy. The different is that Cambodia is smarter and they will not be fool to risk their economic stability for long economic disaster and insecurity. They will show up at the poll if they dont like you. I appreciate your enthusiasm wanting to change new leadership of Cambodia. While, I agreed with you but not in that method of madness. Cambodia has been stable for about 20 plus years. Economically, Cambodia cannot afford instability and insecurity. Cambodia cannot afford weak government either. I would urge that people sit back and relax look at those countries that wanted regime change and where they are at today before you started your fire cracker. If we haven't learn from ours own past 4 regimes changed in Cambodia then we should wait first. Since when the last time we ever have any peace? Let examine the four regimes changed Cambodia went through and what did it benefit us? During Sihanouk (សង្គមរាស្រ្តយំ) you can't speak against the king as you witnessed what happened to Son Ngoc Thanh and his followers line up in the firing squart, The Lon Nol regime, it was another disaster leading toward the KR, the KR regime turned the clock back to year zero and caused 2 millions Cambodian in 3.8 years. We now have CPP, and Cambodia first real stability and now people wanted to copy Tunisia and others. ឃើញដំរីជុះចង់ជុះតាមដំរី You got to be kidding me? Khmer seen enough regimes changed. If I were you, I would sit back with some pop corn, sun glass enjoy myself watching those birds that wanted regime change at other countries and look at where they are today. I would learn from their mistakes, Changing regime is easy but maintaining the country afterward is the difficult task. Businesses, investors and others would move out, no jobs for people, no foods etc. You remember Soviet Union switching to democracy, everybody fought for their own dependence, they can't even find bread to eat. Iraq is another disaster right now infront of your eyes, where they are at now economically and security after Saddam? Iraq fought each others and bomb went off in the middle of the market daily. Is that the regime change you want to see? How many more examples should I bring in order for you to understand that it is not the right action for Cambodia changes. Why dont you organize your political party and work your way to get back into the ring and gain your support from people in a peaceful ways?. The way you are approaching leadership change is not looking out for the national interests of Cambodia. You are nothing but about yourself and power hunger. I would respect you more if you can call all the opposition leaders together and create a unite democracy banner and run your campaign against CPP in a peaceful manner. Cambodia is not winner take all system, you can remain in opposition in the parliament to ensure that the government looking out for the best interest of Cambodia. You know full well that CPP is not undispute champ, Funcinpec beated them in the past. It can be beaten again with proper campaign strategies. Are you afraid that you might not be the PM candidate? Are you afraid to have opposition election to pick who can be the PM candidate to represent for upcoming election? Are you a dictatorship yourself under the opposition banner? Mu Sochua or Kem Sokha can probably beat you for PM candidate.
Warrior Blood, I dont know who you are but you are hitting the nail right on the head. We are sick and tire of regime change. We want to work, make money and feed our children. We wanted what the US has which is free economy. Sam Rainsy should learn from you.
I only share my oppinion. Whatever Mr. Sam Rainsy does, it is his rights. I dont want to see Cambodia gone through regime change that way. We need stability not more killings of our own people. Sam Rainsy doesnt need to listen to me as suggested by the commentor but he should think of Khmer national interests. Our history of regime changed without election drove Cambodia backward to stone age as I mentioned 4 regimes changed in this century. Democracy is in place for cambodian to follow, let use that democracy vehicle. I know it is not perfect but over time we will perfect it. It took American couple hundreds years to reach this far. We are at the infantcy stage so give it some time. Let works together and change the regime through election processes.
I mostly tend to agree with the oppositions, but I think a people power revolution in Cambodia is unlikely and will not succeed if it takes place because Hun Sen will order his troops to massacre the demonstrators. If people will rise up in a people power revolution then the Buddha's prophecy of "cheam darp knorng domrei" (the blood will reach the elephant's belly) will be correct as a result of Hun Sen's massacre.
Only a peaceful change of regime, like election, will not cause bloodshed, but the oppositions don't have much choice because Hun Sen cheated in every election to win.
