Hun Manet orders new army centres

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's son Hun Manet inspected his country's military bases close to the Thai border last week and ordered two military command centres to be constructed, said a source.

The source in the Suranaree Task Force said Maj Gen Hun Manet visited Cambodian soldiers behind Preah Vihear temple in the disputed border area and ordered subordinates to set up the two command units in Oddar Meanchey province _ one in Anlongveng district and one opposite Thailand's Surin province where Ta Muen and Ta Kwai [Ta Krabey] temples are located.

The source said Hun Manet had kept a low profile in recent months and until last week had stayed in Phnom Penh after Cambodian troops engaged in fierce border clashes with Thai troops in Si Sa Ket and Surin provinces earlier this year.

The source added that Cambodia had been concerned that the Thai military might create a situation on the border and use this as an excuse to prevent yesterday's election going ahead.

Cambodian soldiers had evacuated their family members from their border camps as part of preparations for this possibility.

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon yesterday denied that 300 foreign troops were helping Cambodian soldiers along the border.

He said Thailand and Cambodia did not want a war with each other.

Along the border, both Cambodia and Thailand are replacing their troops. A Thai source said Cambodian soldiers often changed their uniforms and scarves to create the perception that reinforcements were being brought in.

Gen Prawit reiterated that Thai soldiers were capable of protecting the people and territory along the border.

I am glad to see Cambodia's military taking proactive approach to be ready for and future conflict. This is good sign of Khmer taking leadership into another level; I have alway thought about it; we got to build more command centers but I never mentioned it in my comment because it is sensitivity issues but now it comes true. Cambodia's government and its military is very proactive; this is how future leader should act to protect Cambodia.

Why are we taking news from our country from the Bangkok Post.

It seem like most of our[Cambodia] media organization sitting in front of the computer printing old news from others. We are not in the front line and try to get the up to date news on our own.

4:08 PM, You should understand that online media like Khmerization and Ki Media are offering the news for free. They offered their free time and spent hours of their free time to bring all these news to us for free. If all of us want firsthand news, then we must be prepared to pay for it. For now, we should say thank to Khmerization or Ki Media for spending their free time to post the news for us for free.

Khmerization has done excellent job bringing instant news to Cambodian community. I want you to know that I really appreciate it and thankful. Khmerization did it out of love. This is hard work, please dont think just because you sit infront of the computer it is not hard work. It is very hard to find news and constant update every second hours after hours. I actually stop going to other website because I can get news from Khmerization instantly much better than any other place such as RFA, VOA etc.

On a side note to the commenters; I think Cambodia military will not disclose how they will build the command centre in details as you wanted in the news, however you brought up good suggestion of where to build it and they might thought of that already. Dont forget, this guy is West Point gratuated so I am very optimistic that he is no dummy. Although, you point is very valid.
