AKP Phnom Penh, July 21, 2011 –Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Hor Namhong, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said Cambodia will withdraw its troops when Indonesian observers arrive at the disputed area around the Preah Vihear temple.
Speaking to reporters on arrival at Phnom Penh international airport on July 20 from the public hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague, Netherlands over ICJ’s decision on the measures of border issue at Preah Vihear Temple and the ASEAN ministerial meeting in Indonesia, he said ICJ did not set the deadline for the troop pullout, but ordered to withdrawal the troops from the nearby area around Preah Vihear temple to avoid the damage of the temple made by Thailand.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague ordered on July 18 both Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw their troops from demilitarized zone around the Preah Vihear temple.
He said he earlier wrote to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, who chairs Asean, asking Jakarta to dispatch its observers to the border area as soon as possible in conformity with the decision of ICJ.
“For Cambodia, Indonesian observers must arrive to examine the area first, before we withdraw,” he said.
“Cambodia does not kick out either General Border Committee meeting or Joint Border Committee meeting with Thailand ahead of the troop pullout,” he said, adding that “But I think that the new Thai government will take office soon, so the caretaker government Abhisit Vejjajjiva has no time to talk on this issue.”
He said Cambodia hoped that the new Thai government in coming weeks probably can negotiate on it.
Cambodia fully supports the order of the International Court of justice, which is completely responsive to the request of Cambodia that wants peace in the area of the Temple of Preah Vihear, the observers to be stationed in the provisional demilitarized zone and the continuation of normal civilian activities, according to Cambodian government’s statement issued following ICJ’s decision.
