S. Korea’s Grant Aid to Railway and Road Development in Cambodia

AKP Phnom Penh, June 21, 2011 –S. Korea has provided US$ six million as a grant aid for master plan of railway network development in Cambodia, and road safety equipment & materials and safety measures for National Road No. 3 and National Road No. 48.

An agreement on the grant aid for these projects was signed in a ceremony held on June 17 by H.E. Toch Chan Kosal, secretary of state at the ministry of Public Works and Transport and Dr. Shin Eui Cheil, representative of Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Cambodia in the presence of H.E. Tram Iv Toeuk, minister of Public Works and Transport and H.E. Chang Hojin, S. Korean ambassador to Cambodia.

Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Tram Iv Toeuk said that the project for constructing master plan of railway network development responded timely to the specific need of the Cambodian royal government for heightening the effectiveness and safety of the transport network in the country as well as in the region.

Railway network is an effective means to help the transportation and ease the burden of the heavy load which causes the damage to the road, he said, adding that the Cambodian royal government spent much fund for road maintenance, and the reduction of the traffic congestion and road accident.

The minister said that Korea is a good major partner of Cambodia in all sectors such as trade, health, industrial, tourism, education, technology and especially public transportation and infrastructure.

He also elaborated on the agreement on the two projects over the master plan of railway network development in Cambodia, and road safety equipment & materials and safety measures for National Road No. 3 and National Road No. 48.

He added that since 2005, everyday five people died and US$ 250 million were lost every year because of traffic accident as the figure in 2009 showed that US$ 248 lost and US$ 279 million were lost in 2010.
