This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Paris Peace Agreements for Cambodia signed on 29th October 1991. My husband, Bunheang and I, have been involved with the Movement of the Khmer Mchas Srok (KMS) to push for the Agreements to be reviewed by the UN and the 21 signatory countries, including Australia, Thailand and Vietnam. The perfect example for the Agreements needs to be reviewed is the issues involving Preah Vihear temple and the recent response by Thai Government to refuse to withdraw its army from the temple, the Khmer legitimate territory.
Therefore, we would like to invite all Khmer compatriots to participate and form a working party to organize an event to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the PPA.
We have in mind to invite to join us in the working party, the former Australian High Court Judge Michael Kirby who have been very supportive to the PPA and Khmer people, in fact he attended the meeting organised by the KMS at the UN Geneva in March this year, to work on the cause.
There will be an event that the KMS has the UN staff will organize at University of Sydney to host a forum to discuss the issue in relation to PPA in August. We anticipate that former Senator Gareth Evans will be joining in the panel discussion in August. We believe this is a great opportunity for Khmer compatriots to join force and declare our rights to the world by pushing the existing PPA to work in favor for Cambodia and its long suffering people. It will be good for us to meet and prepare for the upcoming event and share our patriotic effort to rebuild our homeland.
We look forward to your anticipation and reply.
Best regards,
Bunheang and Phiny Ung
